Jan Aushadhi Scheme – Medicine at an Affordable Price for All

What is the Jan Aushadhi Scheme All About?

In a country where healthcare costs can often strain household budgets, the Jan Aushadhi Scheme (officially the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana – PMBJP) is a game-changing initiative by the Government of India. Its goal? To ensure every citizen, regardless of income level, has access to affordable, quality generic medicines.

Launched to tackle the high cost of branded drugs, Jan Aushadhi provides cost-effective alternatives without compromising on quality. These medicines are sold under their generic names but match the branded counterparts in efficacy and safety.

 How the Scheme Works:

 Who Can Benefit?

  • 9,000+ Jan Aushadhi Kendras (stores) have been opened across India, from cities to remote villages.

  • Over 1,600 medicines and 250 surgical items are available.

  • Prices are 50–90% lower than their branded counterparts — making treatment significantly more accessible.

  • A strong focus on critical and long-term illnesses such as:

    • Diabetes

    • Cancer

    • Heart disease

    • Women’s health needs

    • Geriatric care

 Everyone. But especially:

      • Low- and middle-income families
      • Patients with chronic illnesses needing regular medication

      • Senior citizens and women requiring specialized drugs

      • Students, daily wage workers, and anyone without private insurance

 Why It Matters:

The Jan Aushadhi Scheme isn’t just about cheaper medicines — it’s about health equity. It empowers every Indian to take charge of their health without worrying about affordability. Whether it’s a heart medicine that saves lives or a painkiller that eases discomfort, no one should have to choose between treatment and daily expenses.

🎯 Core Objectives:

  • Cut Healthcare Costs: Reduce the financial burden on families by slashing medicine prices.

  • Promote Generics: Encourage trust and widespread use of generic drugs that meet rigorous quality standards.

  • Improve Availability: Ensure that essential medicines are available in both urban and rural India through dedicated stores.
